Combating cybercrime

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) gave the Business Coalition for Women (BCFW) participants their word that they would be safe from cyberbullying, which is especially bad for women and girls in the country.

Georgina Kiele, the Executive Manager for Cyber Security and Digital Government Standards, said that the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) stressed cyber security and safety on social media and other forms of communication like radio, especially NBC radio, to keep women and girls safe online.

The awareness campaign has been led by DICT and the National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA).

We recognize the importance of dealing with online aggression, which is why DICT is also collaborating with the police cybercrime unit to develop a website for reporting issues such as online abuse,” Kiele added.

She also said that a Social Media Management Desk had been set up to help the government deal with and handle fake news, misinformation, and disinformation.

Kiele told the workshop attendees and other important people that the department’s top priorities are to deal with cybercrime and other cyber issues.

In its early stages, the National Cyber Coordination Centre plans to make technologies available to help agencies like the police and other security agencies coordinate their work better, she said.

At the workshop, people talked about issues affecting women and girls right now, especially in cyberspace, like online bullying, and how it can cause long-lasting trauma to victims, especially women and girls, as well as ways to stop cyberbullying.

At the meeting, there were people from the Department of Justice and Attorney Generals, NICTA, and organizations like Equal Playing Field.
