PNG Students Developed Local Digital “Phone Book”

TechInPacific – PNG’s first digital portable phone directory was launched in Lae by electrical engineering staff and students of the National Polytech Institute. The ez-directory software was developed with the help of the 76 electrical engineering students and their lecturers. Senior lecturer Ferdinand Cenon said the directory came in a flash drive.

The directory contains listings, contact details and locations of companies, business houses and government agencies. It is still being updated with 800 listings of names and contact details being done so far, he said.

Cenon said this e-phone directory was similar to the phone directory by Yellow Pages, but different only because it was portable and could be used on any laptop or desktop computer.

Another product developed by the institute, the asset management system, was also introduced yesterday. “This comes after we found that most companies and organisations have problems with stock-taking and inventory control,” Cenon said.
