Can Fiji Become the E-Commerce Powerhouse of the Pacific? Deputy PM Outlines a Bold Vision

Fiji possesses significant potential to establish strong comparative advantages in the e-commerce sector, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica.

Speaking at the launch of the National E-Commerce Strategy in Suva on Tuesday, Mr. Kamikamica emphasized that Fijians are digitally adept and eager to embrace new technologies, forming a solid foundation for the expansion of e-commerce.

He highlighted that, when coupled with the nation’s “robust” ICT infrastructure and growing digital connectivity, these factors would enable businesses and consumers to engage in online trade seamlessly.

“As global e-commerce continues its extraordinary growth, with projections estimating it will reach $US4.32 trillion by 2025, Fiji has a prime opportunity to leverage this trend,” Mr. Kamikamica stated.

He further noted that Fiji’s strategic role as the economic, logistics, and transportation hub of the Pacific grants the country a distinct advantage, ensuring the efficient movement of goods and services across the region.

Additionally, he pointed out that Fiji’s flourishing services sector—spanning tourism, creative industries, professional digital services, and outsourcing—plays a vital role in this growth.

Mr. Kamikamica stated that, unlike the trade of physical goods, these sectors encounter fewer logistical challenges, enabling greater scalability and competitiveness in the global market.

He emphasized that with these advantages, Fiji is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the digital economy.

“A thriving e-commerce sector also depends on a strong supporting ecosystem. Beyond online transactions, this includes reliable logistics, digital marketing, and fintech solutions,” he explained.

Mr. Kamikamica further noted that the Government remains committed to fostering collaborations among marketplaces, e-shops, delivery companies, web designers, and financial service providers. These efforts aim to establish an environment where e-commerce can not only flourish but also become a driving force behind economic transformation.
