Unitech Opens rice training farm

Today at the University of Technology in Lae was the ceremonial groundbreaking for a rice training farm.

Following a cooperation between Trukai Industries and Unitech, the construction of rice farming facilities for Trukai’s smart farmer program participants will begin with the event.

This area was devoid of vegetation at this time last year, according to Alan Preston, CEO of Trukai Industries. We’ve established a commercial agreement to instruct and train farmers from all over the nation on how to cultivate rice for the vilage and how to grow rice as a profitable crop with the help of Unitech.

This area is 10 hectares of achievement and success. In January, 150 farmers received training here on how to harvest rice and how to apply their newfound knowledge and experience in their home villages.

The Sun Rise Group, a subsidiary of Trukai Industries, owns two-thirds of the business; the remaining three-quarters are held by the people of Papua New Guinea via Melanesian Trustee Services.

SunRise Group CEO Rob Gordon, who was present at the occasion, stated that the grassroots approach is the most enduring and sustainable way to build the rice business in PNG.

Since this is happening at the local level, Gordon explained, “we are able to have farmers graduate, go back to their Own land, and have a visit from our specialists to see how they’re going to make sure that this is something that they repeat.” According to what I understand, there are currently farmers in several regions of the nation who have been growing numerous crops for many years, which speaks to the viability of this scheme.

Gordon praised the Unitech team and said SunRise is happy to help them through Trukai, calling their collaboration “deep.”

To my perspective, this deserves to be truly recognized across the nation, and we must ensure that its political profile is raised so that people can see that changes are possible but more at the local level than necessarily only through headlines.

The building of two dome sheds, two silos, a facility for drying rice, a small room for cooling seeds, and an office will begin with the groundbreaking ceremony.
