Samoa Unveils Revolutionary Polymer Banknotes

The Central Bank of Samoa (CBS) has officially revealed its plans to modernize the existing $5, $10, and $20 Tālā banknotes by transitioTālāning from traditional cotton-based paper to a more advanced polymer substrate. This marks a significant milestone in the nation’s currency system.

The enhanced polymer notes will be introduced in a phased approach. The initial release will feature the $5 Tālā denomination, set to be issued on Monday, December 18, 2023, aligning with the heightened demand anticipated during the festive season. Subsequently, the $10 and $20 Tālā denominations are slated for release in the first quarter of 2024.

The current $5, $10, and $20 Tālā banknotes will co-circulate during the transition to our new, more resilient polymer notes. Building on the success of the 2019 Commemorative $10 polymer note issuance, CBS has expanded this technology to include the $5 and $20 Tālā denominations for the first time. The polymer $10 note has demonstrated exceptional durability, maintaining a higher quality compared to its paper predecessor. These polymer banknotes are crafted to endure longer, stay cleaner, and uphold an elevated standard of quality, showcasing CBS’s dedication to both longevity and aesthetics. Enhancing their durability is crucial, given the significant wear and tear faced by lower denomination banknotes.

CBS transitioned to polymer, necessitating updates to existing designs to fully leverage the distinctive properties of polymer substrates. De La Rue was chosen to both design and print the new banknotes using the SAEFGUARD® substrate. This choice of polymer improves the durability of the banknotes and elevates their security features, establishing a fresh benchmark in currency performance.

The polymer substrate is a pinnacle of security, boasting inherent safety, advanced security features, and unique properties.

The unique texture of polymer notes sets them apart from traditional paper banknotes.

Our banknotes boast special printing techniques on the surface and embedded within the polymer substrate, ensuring a rich design and steadfast ink adhesion. These integrated features collectively heighten the security of our currency.

Incorporating a distinctive polymer attribute known as Tactile Emboss, our new banknotes feature a pattern of raised dots on each denomination. This tactile innovation, tailored for the visually impaired, facilitates easy identification—with six dots on the $5, 8 dots on the $10, and 10 dots on the $20. Accessibility is at the forefront of our design, offering a seamless and inclusive experience.

CBS emphasizes the importance of carefully handling the new banknotes, highlighting their significance as national pride and identity symbols. To maintain their longevity and functionality, citizens are urged to keep the banknotes unfolded in wallets or purses, avoiding crumpling, bending, or exposure to heat. Stapling is discouraged, as staple pin holes may lead to tearing. As CBS introduces the polymer upgrade, the commitment to providing secure, high-quality banknotes aligning with international standards and reflecting Samoa’s spirit and values is reiterated.
