During a meeting with the Minister for Education of the People’s Republic of China, Don Polye, the Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science, Technology, and Sport, discussed the integration of Starlink into the entire higher education sector.

During his recent address to Minister Huai Jinpeng, Polye emphasized his 2024 agenda and urged developing countries to prioritize investment in affordable and accessible internet access.

During our discussion, I emphasized the importance of ensuring high-speed internet connectivity in PNG. Just as physical roads are essential for transportation, a robust digital infrastructure is crucial for facilitating educational advancements. I am encouraged by the Department of Telecommunications engagement with Starlink and see potential in leveraging this partnership to enhance the dissemination of information across higher education institutions such as universities, colleges, and TVETs. This could significantly improve the speed and volume of information delivery within a shorter time frame.

He highlighted that Starlink significantly expanded its coverage in PNG last year, providing high-speed internet access that is beneficial for the sector’s digital transformation.

Polye is excited about the potential of Starlink’s impressive download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and low latency of 20 milliseconds. In a short amount of time, users can access a significant volume of information. “We have decided to utilize Starlink services to enhance our digital education initiatives in all our higher institutions,” Polye stated. He is keen on bridging the digital divide in rural and remote areas through Starlink and plans to kick-start this initiative this year. Polye encourages others in the country to follow suit in leveraging Starlink for educational advancement.

In his efforts to advance a more digitalized education system, Minister Polye is also dedicated to reducing paper usage in the higher education sector. He emphasized that this initiative will contribute significantly to environmental conservation.

The establishment of digitalized institutions plays a pivotal role in environmental conservation by reducing the need for book purchases and paper printing. In the 21st century, higher education institutions should prioritize environmental responsibility and strive to become paperless entities,” stated Polye.
